What Makes a Good Hairstylist

Making the decision to become a stylist is a big deal. There is a lot of time and dedication needed to succeed in this industry. And, whether you are just starting out or have been a stylist for years, everyone can learn—or be reminded of—the things that make a good stylist.

  • Have Good Listening Skills—this could be the most important part of your job. Your clients come to you to look and feel better. So, giving them what they want is important. If you’re too busy thinking about your bad day or planning what you think would look good on your client’s face, you could miss hearing what they want. Although you should definitely use your expertise to make recommendations, it is hard to do if you don’t know what your client is going for.
  • Learn Effective Communication Skills—once you’ve heard what your client wants, repeat it back to make sure you understand what he or she wants. Always check to make sure you are both on the same page. You have to be able to effectively express yourself to do this.
  • Be Genuinely Charismatic—be personable, but not fake! Feel your clients out, especially if he or she is new. Some clients want to chat about everything; others don’t want to talk much. Treat everyone as an individual and be as personable as you feel you can be.
  • Continue Your Education—yes, you might be required to maintain a certain number of continuing education hours to keep your licensure or job. But, go beyond what is expected. Challenge yourself and take classes on your own that interest you. This will set you apart from your competition, offer your loyal clients more and keep things fresh for you always.
  • Understand Biology—being knowledgeable about the body and its conditions is appeasing to your clients and gives you something to offer that not everyone in the industry can. When you have an understanding for skin, scalp or hair conditions, you can inform your clients. This will develop a trust between you and your clients that will keep them returning to you.
  • Stay on Top of Trends—being the expert in your industry will give your clients confidence in you. Don’t get caught behind the times because an important part of your job is to keep your clients trendy and beautiful!

These are just some of the ways that you can be a great stylist. Using these tips regularly can help you on your path to being a successful and sought after stylist!
