Tips for Choosing the Best Haircut for your Face Shape

Faces come in many different shapes such as oval, round, square, heart and oblong, to name a few. Just as there are many different face shapes, there are also many different haircuts that work best for each type of shape. Salon Helena has a team of styling experts that keep up on the latest trends, technology and guidelines for hair. This week we share our tips for choosing the best haircut that compliments your face shape.

Face Shapes and Haircuts

Determining your face shape can sometimes be more difficult than looking in the mirror. It can require a close examination of features. Here are some characteristics of each shape to help you better determine your shape:

  • Square – One of the most common face shapes, square faces do not narrow much from cheekbone to forehead, or cheekbone to jawline, but give an angular appearance. Sometimes with square faces, the jawline may appear sharply-angled at corners and the forehead will be squared off.

Celebrity Example: Katie Holmes, Rachel McAdams, Keira Knightley

Hairstyle Haircuts that give a soft edge around the face compliment the square shape very well. Avoid short cuts above the jaw (short bobs, pixies) as these can exaggerate the squareness.

  • Round – A round face shape has its widest point across the middle of the face (cheekbones) and narrows a bit at the forehead and chin. This is not an angular shape and is considered slightly wider than oval or oblong face shapes.

Celebrity Example: Kirsten Dunst, Ginnifer Goodwin, Fergie

Hairstyle – Long pieces that fall around your face lengthen its appearance and make it look thinner. This look can be created with hair extensions from Salon Helena, growing out your hair, or adding long layers around your face. A longer wispy fringe bang looks great with round faces. However, avoid blunt bangs and round cuts.

  • Oval – Oval face shapes are considered “well-balanced” as they are not too angular, round or full. An oval face shape is widest at the cheekbones, but not to the extent of a round face. It narrows a tiny bit near the jaw line and forehead with the width of both being almost equal.

Celebrity Example: Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Rihanna

Hairstyle – Oval faces can practically get away with any haircut. We recommend blunt bands, or for an edgy but cute look, try a pixie cut. They are always in style

  • Heart – A heart-shaped face is also called an inverted triangle. This shape is widest at the forehead and narrows towards the jaw line. The jaw would be the narrowest point of the face and this face shape can be angled or round.

Celebrity Example: Zoe Saldana, Reese Witherspoon, Jessica Biel

Hairstyle – A haircut that creates more volume near your jaw line is great for accentuating your features. Avoid a short, full style that may draw attention to your forehead or extra-long hairstyles that go far below your shoulders. Try to not go longer than four inches below your shoulders when growing it out.

  • Oblong – This type of face shape is very similar to the square face, except it is longer. This face is pretty straight with cheekbones not much wider (if any) than the forehead and jaw line.

Celebrity Example: Sarah Jessica Parker, Gwyneth Paltrow, Liv Tyler

Hairstyle: A cute short haircut is perfect for adding some width to your face. We also recommend one length, styles with blunt bangs. Avoid having too much length, as this can make your face appear to look longer.
