Halloween Make-up Tips from Salon Helena

Halloween traditions often include dressing up in scary or ghoulish costumes, community events, corn mazes and candy. It also means lots of holiday parties to get ready for. Putting on makeup for this holiday is unlike any other and many Halloween makeup products can dry out your skin and cause acne. Salon Helena in Albuquerque shares some tips and tricks for applying your makeup this Halloween and taking care of your skin at the same time.

Scare your Friends, Not your Skin

As adults, it may not seem cool to go trick-or-treating, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still dress up and celebrate this October holiday with your friends and dressing up on Halloween usually means caking on the make-up. The best part about the makeup is scaring your friends or appearing as a whole new person, but there is a bad part – The zits and acne that come the morning after.

Halloween is one of our favorite holidays at Salon Helena in Albuquerque, but to make it even better, be sure your skin stays protected from the crazy makeup with the following tips:

  • Skip the Cheap Makeup. During this holiday season, there is Halloween makeup sold EVERYWHERE. Though cheap doesn’t necessarily mean poor quality, this is a time when you shouldn’t skimp on cost. Cheap makeup can clog your pores, cause oily skin (a lot of Halloween make-up is grease paint) and can lead to allergic reactions that range from mild to severe. Try to avoid using the grease paints, and try to use more traditional make-up in your personal collection to create an untraditional look. If you have to go cheap, test it before buying it on a small area of skin on your arm to make sure you aren’t allergic.
  • Remove Makeup before Bed. So you spent the night dancing away, entering costume contests and bobbing for apples possibly and are completely exhausted. No matter the reason you want to go to bed immediately, STOP! You should wash your face and get all of the make-up off before you go to dreamland. Using a cleanser that isn’t harsh is the key to stopping your skin from drying out. Depending on how much make-up you are wearing, you may want to wash TWICE.
  • Use a Moisturizer. When you apply a daily moisturizer as part of your skincare regimen, you are helping your face stay fresh and hydrated. Using a moisturizer also helps make-up last longer so you won’t have to worry about reapplying throughout the night. Salon Helena recommends putting moisturizer on in the morning with a good SPF and then again at night after you remove your makeup before going to bed so you can avoid waking with alligator scales on your face.

Whether you are wearing Halloween makeup this season for your own celebration or are helping your children wear make-up for theirs, make sure to always apply to clean faces with clean brushes and sponges, and to clean your face of all makeup before going to sleep. If you think you need a better cleansing after the night’s festivities, call us for a facial. We will rejuvenate your skin and help prevent possible breakouts.
