Spray Tanning Dos and Don’ts
In the face of overwhelming evidence that the sun’s harmful rays can permanently damage your skin, spray tanning just makes sense. You’ll get the same beach-worthy bronze appeal, but without the risks. No straps or cloudy days will wreck the perfection of a spray tan. However, achieving perfection takes some forethought. Make the most of your spray-tanning session with these dos and don’ts.
Do:
- Do call the salon. If you’re a novice to spray tanning, your technician can give you specific advice on how to get the most even application.
- Do trust your technician. These folks are pros at their job and will give you the look you crave if you put yourself in their capable hands.
- Do wear loose-fitting dark clothing. The tanning formula may stain lighter fabrics, while friction from tight clothing could leave the developing tan uneven.
- Do wait to shower. Tanning professionals recommend an eight-hour wait before you step into the shower or bath.
- Do moisturize. A spray tan develops on the surface of your skin, and dry skin can become flaky. If you want your spray tan to last, moisturize your skin regularly to minimize color loss over time.
Don’t:
- Do Not moisturize before tanning. While you need to keep your skin supple and well-hydrated after tanning, moisturizer will create an unwanted layer between you and the tanning solution if you moisturize before your appointment.
- Do Not skimp on your sunscreen. Your spray tan mimics the look of sun-bronzed skin, but underneath the color, your skin remains unprotected from the sun’s rays. Lavish your skin with sunscreen both before and after your spray tan.
- Do Not apply alcohol-based products to your skin. That includes toners and astringents, but it also means the products you might inadvertently get on your skin such as hair gels and sprays.
- Do Not get too rough when you exfoliate. Overly zealous scrubbing could result in a blotchy tan or irritated skin.
- Avoid sweat. Sweat will wash away the tanning formula as it develops, leaving you with potentially unsatisfying results. Take it easy as you tan and save the calisthenics for later when your tan fully sets in.
- Get too cozy with your dog. While tanning solution won’t harm him, his licking could remove some of the tanning solution before it has a chance to develop. The same goes for any other critter who might be tempted to sample your spray tan before it’s done.
With the right care, a spray tan can outlast a natural tan without risking your health. Talk to your technician if you have any questions about the process.
